If you choose to have a forensic medical examination, it’s important to know that evidence collection is most effective within a limited timeframe. Coming in as soon as you feel ready can help ensure the best possible documentation and support.
Forensic Medical Exams
Reasons to undergo a Forensic Medical Exam:
Specially trained nurses provide comprehensive care following an assault. This includes testing for sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy with the appropriate follow-up care needed. Nurses will also identify physical health concerns and ensure you are connected to the necessary resources.
After a forensic medical exam, you are connected to mental health resources, such as Bridging Hope’s therapy department, to begin the process of healing after an assault.
Qualified nurses will collect a sexual assault kit, including the appropriate evidence. If you are reporting to police, which is optional if you are 18+ years old, the evidence will be sent for DNA testing by law enforcement. If you are unsure or not ready to report, Bridging Hope will store your evidence indefinitely.
